Explain my process of intern → Part-time freelancer role

I was brought on initially as an intern during the summer of 2018. This internship was for class credit that would count toward 3 credit hours in my Digital Marketing major. I started out learning basics such as WordPress, SEO, Presentation Editing, etc. My first month was spent learning the overall business model of GSMM which I believe is vital. The more I learned about the ideas of the company and the potential it had the more invested I became. This was a driving reason for me to stay on in the Fall and furthermore into the following Spring semester. I believe that having Benjamin explain to me his knowledge and expertise as well as what his expectations were for the company allowed me to start enjoying the work I was doing though it could get tedious and boring at times in the beginning. Having Benjamin explain to me why I was doing certain things and showing me how my work helped the company grow gave meaning to my work and i felt/feel like a valued member of the team, which i think is the key to keeping a member on board for so long. With bonus incentives keeping me going, I made my way to the 200hr mark (needed for class credit) and my role began to expand. I think giving more autonomy progressively also is another key to keeping team members for a longer period of time. As I am managing a small task such as the GSMM Logo design I feel apart of the company and not just a one term intern.

  • I think this idea of a “careers” page is a great idea!
  • A lot of students look for summer internships → maybe create a condensed version of this program just for the summer months?
    • Timeline: training throughout summer, have 1 main project to work on throughout summer that they can become “expert at”, work on additional projects as given. They can present their main project at the end / put it in a nice ppt deck.
  • Ideas for future interns – have the weekly call (make this one shorter to makeup for time); and then have weekly one -on -ones with CEO to get better understanding of projects/company/ training etc. this can help build relationship.
